Since 1998, Alfaguara has sponsored the Alfaguara Literary Award. It is one of the most prestigious literary awards to be given to a previously unpublished Spanish-language novel and the award is well-known and respected worldwide. In mid 2005, with the arrival of Grupo Santillana Brazil, a new phase of diversification and growth got underway.
