Unión Radio

Logo Unión Radio

Unión Radio is the world's largest Spanish-language radio broadcasting group with more than 22 million listeners and more than 1,250 stations, either directly owned or associates, spread out over Spain, the US, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina and Chile.

Unión Radio has developed a business model which places great importance on content and which favours the development of global brands. This in turn fosters the development of new formats across the board, both in general radio as well as in music radio. We're a global presence with a local outlook and this allows us to benefit from an exchange of ideas throughout the network and boost the value of the group.

In 2008, Unión Radio, 80% owned by PRISA and 20% by Grupo Godó, approved an agreement to sell part of their stake in Union Radio to British venture capital firm 3i giving them a 16.2% stake. The entry of this new partner will enable the radio group to expand throughout Latin America and, significantly, among the Hispanic community in the US.

In Spain, Unión Radio's flagship station is Cadena SER which boasts 481 stations -both directly owned and associates- broadcasting to the general public. There are also five music stations: 40 Principales, Cadena Dial, M-80, Radiolé and Máxima FM.

Cadena SER closed 2007 confirming its absolute lead in Spanish radio, with 5,056,000 listeners daily, from Monday to Friday, according to audit bureau figures from EGM. What's more, it widened its lead across all time slots and saw figures rise for its three main programmes: Hoy por hoy, El larguero y La ventana.

In 2007, 40 Principales remained by far the most-listened-to music radio station in Spain – its 3,343,000 listeners guaranteeing the station's number one position in this sector. The station also remains the second-most-popular over all, after the channel SER. Cadena Dial confirms its position as the second-most popular music station, with 1,719,000 listeners.

Grupo Latino de Radio (GLR)

Logo GLR

PRISA's radio activities in the Americas are grouped into the holding GLR (Grupo Latino de Radio).

In the US, the radio group operates through two Spanish-language broadcasters, one in Los Angeles and throughout southern California, where 30% of the US Hispanic population lives, and the other in Miami, where it is the leading Spanish-language station. GLR also owns GLR Networks, a production and distribution company for programmes and commercials for 130 affiliated stations.

In Mexico, Unión Radio operates through Radiópolis, 50% owned by Televisa and managed by Unión Radio. Radiópolis, through its 88 stations, either owned directly or affiliates, broadcasts in three main radio segments: W Radio for talk radio, Bésame and 40 Principales for music radio.

These formats are reproduced throughout Panama, Costa Rica, Chile, Argentina and Colombia.

Logo Radio Caracol

Radio Caracol, is the indisputable leader in Colombia and one of the most prestigious stations in Latin America. It is crucial to Unión Radio's strategy in this area, both because of its experience - the station celebrates 60 years on air this year – as well as its economic solvency. Caracol produces and distributes up to 10 different radio formats of talk and music radio.

Logo Ibero Americana Radio Chile

In July 2007, Unión Radio strengthened its presence in the Americas with the acquisition of Chile's largest broadcaster, Ibero Americana Radio Chile, which owns 140 stations, over eight radio formats, six of which make the top ten in Chile. The operation was carried out through the subsidiary GLR, already present in Chile through the Consorcio Radial de Chile (CRC) with the formats 40 Principales, Bésame, Radioactiva and W Radio.
