Unión Radio

Global communication in Spanish

Logo Unión Radio

Unión Radio is the world's largest Spanish-language radio broadcasting group with more than 23 million listeners and more than 1,200 stations, either directly owned or associates, spread out over Spain, the US, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina and Chile, and franchised in Guatemala and Ecuador.

Unión Radio has developed a business model which places great importance on content and which helps the development of global brands. This in turn fosters the development of new formats across the board, both in general radio as well as in music radio. We're a global presence with a local outlook and this allows us to benefit from an exchange of ideas throughout the network and boost the value of the group.

In 2008, Unión Radio, 80% owned by PRISA and 20% by Grupo Godó, approved an agreement to sell part of their stake in Union Radio to British venture capital firm 3i giving them a 16.63% stake. The entry of this new partner will enable the radio group to expand throughout Latin America and, significantly, among the Hispanic community in the US.

In Spain, Unión Radio's flagship station is Cadena SER which boasts 481 stations -both directly owned and associates- broadcasting to the general public. There are also five music stations: 40 Principales, Cadena Dial, M-80, Radiolé and Máxima FM, and a sport station, Ona Catalana.

Cadena SER closed 2009 confirming its absolute lead in Spanish radio, with almost 5 million listeners daily, from Monday to Friday, according to audit bureau figures from EGM. Its programs also strengthened their lead in all time slots, 24 hours a day, comfortably beating all competitors, with its most important programs garnering more listeners than the sum of all rivals combined.

CADENASER.com is best defined as a current affairs and information audio portal. Participatory, with a strong presence on social networks and a broad range of in-house videos and live coverage, cadenaser.com has reaffirmed its leadership in the online radio sector. At the end of 2009 cadenaser.com had more than two million unique monthly users.

Among music channels, 40 Principales is Spain's top-ranking radio format. In 2009, the network held its lead with 3.654 million listeners. Cadena Dial is ranked second among music networks, reaching an audience record with 1.964 million listeners, an increase of about 200,000. Radiolé, with 496,000 listeners, topped the ranking of channels dedicated to Spanish popular music and Maxima FM, with 568,000, was No. One for dance music. M-80 had 550,000 listeners.

Among the most important events of 2009 were the Premios Ondas Awards, which honor professionals from the worlds of radio, television and music in Spain and Latin America. The Premios 40 Principales Awards, are the only prizes voted by listeners via the different interactive media. They have become the most prestigious of their kind in the Ibero-American music market. The Premios Cadena Dial Awards are also a highlight of the Spanish music calendar, and recognize the work of Spanish-language performers in Spain and America.

Grupo Latino de Radio (GLR)

Logo GLR

In the Americas, Union Radio operates through GLR Grupo Latino de Radio,a company that brings together radio assets and interests outside Spain with a pan-regional position that allows it to cover the most important Spanish-language markets in the Americas.

In the US, the radio group operates through two Spanish-language broadcasters, one in Los Angeles and throughout southern California, where 30% of the US Hispanic population lives, and the other in Miami.

GLR also owns GLR Networks, a production and distribution company for programmes and commercials for 130 affiliated stations.

Logo Radio Caracol

Radio Caracol, with more than 9 million listeners, is the indisputable leader in Colombia and one of the most prestigious stations in Latin America. It is crucial to Unión Radio's strategy in this area, both because of its experience as well as its economic solvency.

Caracol produces and distributes up to 10 different radio formats of talk and music radio, and two radio stations only for Internet.

Logo Ibero Americana Radio Chile

In Chile, Unión Radio is the undisputed leader in the radio market with a 47% share of the audience. Of the eleven distributed formats, six are among the top ten ranking. Radio Corazón, once again, remains the country's most listened to radio channel with an audience figure that triples that of its closest rival in the overall ranking.

It operates 212 stations throughout the country, with ADN and 40 Principales being the only stations to broadcast to Easter Island.

Logo Radiopolis

In Mexico, Union Radio operates through Radiópolis, 50% owned by Televisa, and managed by Unión Radio. Radiópolis, through its 117 stations, either owned or affiliated, has three fundamental programming formats: W Radio for spoken-word radio, and Kebuena, Bésame and 40 Principales for music radio.
