Scholarship announced on scientific journalism

23-03-2017

The Elusives project, funded by the European Union and dedicated to investigating the frontiers of theoretical and experimental physics, is funding a one-year scholarship for a young journalist to collaborate on 'Materia', the EL PAÍS science section. The goal of this scholarship is to improve the training of young professionals in scientific journalism, enhance their experience and knowledge, and to increase awareness among the general public of aspects of physics such as the interaction between matter and antimatter, and the phenomenology of Neutrinos and Dark Matter.

The fellow will spend a year working at Materia, gaining firsthand knowledge of the day-to-day science coverage of a general-interest newspaper. They will also learn about the work being done at the Elusives research centers, consisting of 33 nodes worldwide, 18 in Europe and 15 in the rest of the world. These include the Autonomous University of Madrid, the French CNRS, the German Max Planck Institute, Harvard University (USA), CERN in Geneva or the ICRR of the University of Tokyo (Japan). EL PAÍS is the only newspaper associated with the project.

The applicant must be in his or her first four years of professional career and have not completed a doctorate. The period of four years is measured from the date on which the applicant has obtained the degree that would have legally allowed him or her to enroll in a doctorate, either in their country of origin or in Spain. In addition, the applicant should not have spent more than 12 months of the last three years in the country where the scholarship will be held, in this case Spain. He or she must speak fluent Spanish and English, accredit his academic excellence and submit a letter of motivation and two of recommendation. The scholarship amounts to 3,035.36 euros per month, plus 600 to cover relocation. Other aid may be possible, depending on the family circumstances of the fellow. The contract includes the commitment of the applicant to travel to some of the centers affiliated to the program, and to participate in some of the dissemination work of this European network. Applications must be submitted to the Elusives website before June 15. The scholarship will begin in the autumn of this year.

Elusives is a European project which focuses on Neutrino and Dark Matter phenomenology and their connection, with emphasis on the role of the symmetry relating matter and antimatter.
