EL PAÍS celebrated its 40th anniversary last Thursday, November 24 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico. The celebration was attended by numerous guests from Mexican political, intellectual and business life, including Miguel Ángel Mancera, head of the capital city’s municipal government; PAN’s presidential candidate Margarita Zavala, and the former PRI president Manlio Fabio Beltrones.

The multi-sensorial and innovative exhibition on four decades of news as seen by EL PAÍS was officially opened by Mancera, together with PRISA’s executive chair, Juan Luis Cebrián, the newspaper’s editor-in-chief Antonio Caño, and the director general of Institutional Affairs of the Ministry of Culture, José Luis Martínez.

"We have felt Mexican, Latin American and Ibero-American and we see ourselves as a newspaper in Spanish, not as a Spanish newspaper,"  said Cebrián at an event highlighting the cultural and personal importance of Mexico for the founders of the newspaper – a country where the last three editors of the newspaper had been correspondents. The president of EL PAÍS also said that the the newspaper’s foray into Mexico had been undertaken “in accordance with the principles of a responsible journalism that defends democracy and press excellence."

The inauguration was attended by the head of the Mexico City’s regional municipal authority who, in his speech, paid tribute to the work of the newspaper and its unique way of telling the news every day. He said that El País is set to play a crucial role in the future of Mexico in the wake of the elections in the United States. "It will be a witness to many things that are going to happen in Mexico. It’s vital that the paper reports on what’s going on because of its enormous news resources," Mancera said.

Closing the event, Cebrián recalled the deep cultural and personal roots that the founders of EL PAÍS had in Mexico as well as the country’s influence on the newspaper. And he highlighted the significance of the fact that the exhibition on 40 years of global journalism was crossing the Atlantic: “This exhibition is a tribute to the millions of people who follow us and testament to our commitment to this country, which is at the forefront of the Hispanic world ".
