23-11-2016

EL PAÍS is the most widely read Spanish-language digital newspaper in the world, according to comScore, the global media measurement company. Data for September, the latest month for which global figures are available, certify that the global newspaper registered 11,618,000 unique users, over 2.5 million more than El Mundo, which stood at 9,036,000. In third and fourth places were Argentina’s s Clarín and La Nación with 8.179.000 and 7.382.000 readers respectively.

EL PAÍS’s global lead among Spanish-language media has remained unchallenged over the past two years. Its digital version, according to comScore data, ranks 17th among all newspapers in the world, behind US, Chinese, Indian and British news media titles. EL PAÍS’s position owes much to its strong performance in Latin America, where it jostles for lead with local media in  several countries. In Mexico, it ranked fifth in September, with four million unique users. In Brazil it reached 6.5 million users in August – putting it in sixth place, in what was a news-heavy month, with the celebration of the Rio Olympics and the removal from office of Dilma Rousseff.

EL PAÍS’s lead is not only quantitative. The chief goal of the global newspaper is to offer quality content. In a qualitative metric such as the time readers spend on the site, EL PAÍS saw its average visit duration rise by 49% in October compared to the previous month, according to comScore's Spanish audience measurement figures. In that month, Spanish Internet users spent altogether 547 million minutes consuming news from EL PAÍS, compared to 441 million for El Mundo.

To fulfill its commitment to offering quality news and content, EL PAÍS has the world’s largest network of Spanish-language correspondents and, in addition to its headquarters in Madrid, it has news desks and bureau in Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Washington, Brussels, Bogotá, Buenos Aires and Beijing. What’s more, the global newspaper offers unrivalled Spanish-language audiovisual content. The past year has seen the number of video views increase tenfold. In addition, EL PAÍS provides a television schedule on Facebook Live, which serves up more than 2,000 minutes of weekly broadcasts.
