1958-1990

1958

  • Jesús de Polanco sets up the publishing house Santillana

1976

  • On May 4th, the first issue of the daily El País hits the news stands, just five months after the death of Franco.

1985

  • PRISA becomes the majority shareholder of Cadena SER and takes over management of the company.

1987

  • The EL PAÍS/UAM (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) School of Journalism for post-graduate students is set up.

1990

  • CANAL + begins regular broadcasts.

1991-2000

1991

  • The average circulation of El País Semanal passes the one-million mark.

1994

  • Sogecable launches Canal Satélite Digital, the largest satellite television platform in Spain with a package of four theme-oriented pay channels: Cinemanía, Documanía, Cineclassics and Minimax.

1995

  • CANAL + clocks up 1 million subscribers.

1996

  • El País launches its online edition, El País Digital.
  • PRISA acquires 75% of the sports daily, As, the second-most popular in the country.

1997

  • Canal Satélite Digital launches Europe's first Spanish-language pay-TV package.

2000

  • After an IPO, PRISA goes public on the Madrid Stock Exchange.

2001-2004

2001

  • Through the publishing group Santillana, PRISA acquires 100% of the Brazilian publisher Moderna, which specialises in educational text books. It's a move which sees PRISA strengthen its international presence while furthering the development of its publishing operations in Latin America.
  • PRISA reaches a strategic agreement with Televisa, the world's foremost Spanish-language media corporation, for the joint development of the broadcasting market in Mexico, with the acquisition of 50% of Radiópolis.

2002

  • In April, PRISA signs an agreement with the Colombian business group Valores Bavaria to create Grupo Latino de Radio (GLR), a new holding company to which each party contributed their shares in Caracol Radio, Grupo Latino Radiodifusión, and Radiópolis, to create a Pan-American radio network.
  • In May, Sogecable and Telefónica agree to integrate the digital platforms Vía Digital and Canal Satélite Digital.

2004

  • PRISA increases its stake in the radio broadcaster Grupo Latino de Radio (GLR) to 100%.
  • Aquisition of the Argentinian radio stations Radio Continental and Radio Estéreo.

2005

  • PRISA signs an agreement with the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha aimed at jointly promoting events to celebrate the Fourth Centenary of Don Quijote.
  • In April, through its US subsidiary GLR Services, PRISA acquires the programming and commercial operating rights to the radio station 690 AM, which broadcasts in Spanish in southern California, including the Los Angeles area.
  • In June PRISA acquires, through Santillana, 75% of the Brazilian publisher Editora Objetiva.
  • PRISA, directly and through its subsidiary company Investissements Presse Régionale (IPR), increases its share in French media group Le Monde S.A. to a 17.69% stake.
  • In November, PRISA completes the adquisition of Vértix, the company that holds 33% of the shares and voting rights of the Portuguese group Media Capital SGPS, S.A.

2006

  • In February, PRISA signs an agreement with the Instituto Cervantes to promote Spanish language and culture worldwide.
  • In March, PRISA makes a public acquisition bid on 20% of Sogecable's shares, bringing is total stake to 44.5%.
  • PRISA and Godó bring their radio shares in Spain and Latin America together through Unión Radio, a move that creates the largest radio group in the Spanish-language markets.
  • In October, PRISA announces a public acquisition bid on 100% of the shares of Portuguese group Media Capital.
  • In November, Ignacio Polanco is named vice-president and future president of PRISA by the board of directors of the company.
  • In December, Unión Radio buys 100% of Iberoamerican Radio Chile, Chile's leading broadcaster with 140 stations.

2007

  • PRISA acquires 73.70% of Media Capital after a voluntary takeover bid and then launches yet another. The group’s audiovisual strategy is thus given a further boost.
  • In July, Jesús de Polanco, PRISA's founder and president, dies aged 77.
  • Ignacio Polanco becomes PRISA's president.
  • In July, PRISA acquires 94.40% of Media Capital after another takeover bid.
  • In October, El País, Spain's leading daily newspaper undergoes a redesign, renewing its commitment to quality, credibility and independence.
  • In October, El País Catalan edition celebrates its 25th anniversary.
  • In November, Elpaís.com makes its archive - over a million items - available online to users worldwide.
  • To coincide with the 40th anniversary of sports paper As, the As Sports Awards are established.
  • In December, Unión Radio forms a strategic alliance with British capital risk fund 3i to further expansion in the Hispanic market in the US.

2008

  • Spain's leading business daily, Cinco Días, celebrates its 30th anniversary – which also coincides with 30 years of democracy in Spain.
  • In March, Grupo Santillana CEO Isabel Polanco dies.
  • Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME) and the FTSE Group include PRISA in the new FTSE4GOOD Ibex of socially responsible companies.
  • Santillana Foundation opens a new HQ in Brazil.
  • PRISA acquires 97.71% of Sogecable after a takeover bid in May and exercises a squeeze-out bid for the remaining 2.29%.
  • The Fundación Santillana, launches, in collaboration with the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), the Isabel Polanco International Essay Prize.
  • PRISA holds an Extraordinary General Meeting, in order to approve Sogecable’s fussion in PRISA and the process of recapitalization and restructuring PRISA’s debt.
  • Cinco Días holds the Cinco Días Awards for Innovation in Business, created to mark the 30th anniversary of the finance and business daily.

2009

  • Ignacio Santillana and Manuel Polanco named directors general of PRISA.
  • PRISA extends its bridge loan for one year, conceded to finance the takeover bid over the 100% of the share capital of Sogecable.
  • El País expands its global edition. PRISA and Multimedios del Caribe sign a collaborative agreement.
  • Sogecable signed an agreement with Mediapro that effectively ends the so-called "football war". Digital + will offer all the premier League games as well as the Copa del Rey for the next three seasons.
  • PRISA and In-Store Broadcasting Network (IBN), strategic partners in the Retail Media network throughout Spain and Latin America.
  • PRISA present at Nasdaq its agreement with IBN.
  • PRISA to sell up 25% stake of Santillana Group to private equity firm DLJ South American Partners.
  • PRISA to sell up to 35% of portugal's Media Capital to Ongoing Strategy Investments.
  • PRISA sells Telefónica 21% stake Spain's leading pay TV platform of Digital+.
  • PRISA and its subsidiary Sogecable reaches an agreement with Telecinco to merge their free-to-air TV operations. At the same time, Mediaset's Spanish TV channel takes a 22% stake in Digital+.
