The FAO and EL PAÍS join forces for the planet and its future

17-04-2018

It’s a planet that’s suffering the strain of unprecedented demands on its resources. Humans are not only merely overexploiting their world: the benefits are not fairly distributed and human activity causes excessive pollution. Together, these factors are likely to lead the Earth and its inhabitants towards collapse. Is there still time to save our planet? This is the first question raised by the collection of books published jointly by the FAO and EL PAÍS, El Estado del Planeta, which hits newsstands alongside  the newspaper next Sunday with a cover price of 1.95 euros. The series seeks to raise awareness of the challenges that humanity must urgently face and provides guidelines on what can be done.

The series of books responds to the growing concern among the general public with regard to climate change, the food crisis, the loss of biodiversity, and so on. These issues are included in the 2030 Agenda, adopted by the UN General Assembly, for sustainable development. The collection of 12 books will see experts from this organization tackle the complexity of the issue while making it accessible to all readers through graphics and images.

The first title in the series is called The Great Challenges, which offers an overview of the issues at stake. Subsequent volumes will focus on a range of different challenges: the state of our forests, fresh water, oceans, agriculture, migration, to name just a few. Each book will explain what the problem is, the impact it has on life and possible solutions available not only to us as a collective, but also at an individual level. It’s precisely what we as individuals can do that’s the theme of the last title in the series: The challenges of the future. What can you do?

The data point to a bleak future: 41% of amphibians and 25% of the world's mammals are threatened with extinction; in 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans; and the planet will face the challenge of sustaining almost ten billion people. The State of the Planet is a guide to sustainable development that’s respectful of both people and the environment. EL PAÍS, through Planeta Futuro, offers the most complete information in Spanish on sustainable global development.
