PRISA se suma a la campaña #aliadosdelosODS promovida por la Red Española del Pacto Mundial

The goal of the #aliadosdelosODS campaign is to offer a platform that will give a quantum boost to awareness of the 2030 Agenda

On the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the ratification of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), PRISA has announced that is to join the #aliadosdelosODS campaign, which seeks to promote and raise awareness of the United Nations Goals, in collaboration with the Spanish Network of the Global Compact. The SDGs seek to end poverty and hunger, reduce inequalities and address urgent challenges such as climate change. Tasked with such an ambitious agenda, broad participation is key: by governments, companies, civil society and citizens from all over the world. The 2030 Agenda has the advantage of being universal in nature and outlines 169 ambitious targets. Meeting them requires an unprecedented effort by all sectors of society – andbusiness has a key role to play.

PRISA joined the United Nations Global Compact in 2008, and became a member of its Spanish Network in 2013. In 2016, the Spanish Network invited PRISA to form part of its Executive Committee. Since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda in 2015, in addition to its commitment to promote the Ten Principles, PRISA has endeavored to align its corporate management with the SDGs, thereby seeking out new business opportunitiesand improvingits relationship with its stakeholders while also promoting innovation.

To this end, PRISA has taken on board a series of commitments and good practices. Chief among these is Planeta Futuro (Future Planet), the EL PAÍS section dedicated to sustainable development. At the time of its launch, in January 2014, it initially focused on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) established by the United Nations in 2000, before adopting as a framework the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which were agreed in 2015.The scope was thus broadened to embraceother development issues such as the effects of globalization, the enormous challenges in terms of food, health, employment or education, innovation and technology as engines for development and climate change. Content is generated by dozens of journalists and collaborators from EL PAÍS from all over the world, as well as leading experts from a wide range of organizations, all of whom provide analysis aimed at enriching public debate on crucial issues.

Planeta Futuro initially emerged from a partnership signed in 2013 between EL PAÍS and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has financially supported the project to date. It was set up with the goal offostering public debate on issues related to poverty and development, inequality, social justice and the sustainability of the planet. The initiative was envisaged as acting as a catalyst for promoting values such as equality, participation and solidarity, and as a way to give a voice both to NGOs (Front Line Section), as well as major figures and world leaders (Expert Network Section).

This alliance was extended in February 2016, when the FAO and EL PAÍS signed an agreement with the objective of improving news coverage and access to information on issues related to hunger, agriculture and food. New partners, such as UNICEF, subsequently joined the project to promote reporting on the problems, challenges and opportunities facing children around the world, as well as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to promote awareness of the progress being made and the ongoing challenges in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

Thanks to alliances such as these, Planeta Futuro is a unique and pioneering product in terms of partnerships with philanthropists and organizations when it comes to offering quality, rigorous and truthful news and information on sustainable development. Since the very outset, it has continued to forge alliances and networks with more than 200 organizations, NGOs and institutions, as well as collaborate on events, courses, debates, conferences – all aimed at promoting the 2030 Agenda.

Now, with its support for the #aliadosdelosODS campaign, PRISA is set to further its commitment to the SDGs, and offer a platform that will give a quantum boost to  awareness of the 2030 Agenda and its aims.

With initiatives such as this, the Spanish Network of the Global Compact and its member organizations also seek to contribute to the goal set by the High Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda, under the Presidency of the Government, that seeks to ensure that all citizens are made aware of the SDGs in 2020
