Daniel Anido and Rodolfo Irago cleared of all charges

17-06-2010

Cadena SER journalists Daniel Anido and Rodolfo Irago have been acquitted of the crime of revealing secrets for which they had been initially sentenced. The acquittal was approved by the sixth section of the Provincial Court of Madrid, which ruled in favor of the appeal submitted by the director of the Cadena SER and the director of Information Services against the original ruling of criminal court number 16 of Madrid.

Daniel Anido and Rodolfo Irago had been sentenced on December 18 to one year and nine months in prison and barred from exercising their profession.

Judge Ricardo Rodriguez Fernandez had ruled that the two SER journalists had committed the crime of divulging secrets after making public a list of irregular affiliations to the Partido Popular in Madrid.

The Provincial Court of Madrid, in its ruling made public on June 17, states that the list of irregular members published on Cadena SER's web site could not be considered as forming part of any membership file or list of PP members in the town of Villaviciosa de Odon.

Ruling that the actions of the journalists were not typically criminal in nature, the Provincial Court of Madrid considered as inappropriate and unnecessary the arguments employed in the initial ruling that convicted Daniel Anido and Rodolfo Irago, and overturned it in its entirety.
