The paper reinforces its commitment to Mexico by creating a Mexican front page
El País is launching a website section dedicated exclusively to Mexico. The leading Spanish newspaper thus reinforces its commitment to the world’s most populous Spanish-speaking country, providing readers with Mexican news. El País has reinforced its presence in the country in 2012 with a team of six journalists joining the correspondent Luis Prados and Mexican journalist Salvador Camarena. What was already a priority news section for the newspaper, is now a full newsdesk that manages its own website that aims to set the standard in Mexico and Latin America.
The launch coincides with the end of the the presidential election campaign. The Mexican news team has provided unprecedented coverage with articles, analysis and interviews over the course of the campaign. The team now has not only its space on the website of El País and El País International, but also their own edition produced in and for Mexico. The cover of El País Mexico maintains the position of Latin American news on the right of the web page, as in the international edition.
The Mexican El País cover joins the United States edition, launched in June. The U.S. cover is published by the paper's Washington newsdesk, which has also been reinforced in recent months. El País thus provides, in a specific section, all the the important U.S. news in Spanish, produced and published from the U.S. capital.
El País has become the leading online Spanish-language newspaper in the world. Since the paper embarked on a complete transformation last fall, the El País website has reached 8 million unique users (data from comScore in March). El País is also the most-followed media outlet in Spain on Twitter, with over 1.5 million followers.
