The Ortega y Gasset Awards for Journalism, established in memory of the great Spanish thinker and convened by EL PAÍS, this year celebrate their thirty-first edition. The awards, the most prestigious in Spanish journalism, recognize the most outstanding work published in 2013 worldwide in Spanish. Applications must be submitted by March 14 in one of the following categories: Print Journalism, Digital Journalism, Photojournalism and Outstanding Career. The winners will be announced in EL PAÍS on April 30.
The Print Journalism category covers investigative journalism, reports, articles, and opinion columns. Aspirants should send two original copies of the publication in which the work was originally published.
For the category of Digital Journalism, intended to honor the best work published online, applicants are required to complete a form available online at: www.premiosortegaygasset.com.
For the category of Photojournalism, applicants must submit a copy of their images, a duplicate on CD or DVD and a copy of the newspaper or magazine where the pictures were originally published.
For the Award in the category of Outstanding Career, applicants should submit two copies of a statement detailing the merits of those professionals or media presented as candidates.
The winners will receive a commemorative sculpture by Eduardo Chillida and a cash prize of 15,000 euros.
In last year’s edition of the Awards, the winners were as follows: in the category of Print Journalism, Alberto Salcedo Ramos (Colombia, 1963) for his report La Travesía de Wikdi, published in the magazine Soho. In the category of Digital Journalism, the winner was Juan Ramon Robles (Madrid, 1987), for his video recorded during protests on September 25, 2012 in Madrid. In the category of Photojournalism, the winner was Emilio Morenatti (Zaragoza, 1969) of Associated Press, for a picture taken in Barcelona on March 29, 2012 during the general strike. And finally, the winner for Outstanding Career was Jesus de la Serna (Santander, 1926), honored for his work as a teacher, and an example for future generations of journalists.
