EL PAÍS is the only major general-interest newspaper to maintain its circulation figures in the first six months of the year as compared to the same period in 2010. In a context of global economic crisis and stagnation in the print media sector, sales of EL PAÍS remain stable. During the first half of the year, average daily circulation (Monday-Sunday) was 382,908 copies, according to data from the audit bureau OJD, pending certification. With these results, EL PAÍS enjoys a lead of more than 121,000 copies over the second largest-selling daily.
Sports papers are not immune to the negative trend. As (PRISA) saw sales fall by 5% (194,639) but it is edging closer to its nearest competitor.
Business press has had an uneven performance. Cinco Días (PRISA) is the only business and finance daily to show growth during the first half of the year, closing the period with an increase of 3% (32,359 copies).
