El País wins the King of Spain Award for "Outstanding Communications Medium in Latin America"

El País was honored on Thursday at the King of Spain International Awards for Journalism in the category "Outstanding Communications Medium in Latin America". The prizes are given annually by the Spanish news agency EFE and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development ( AECID). Last year, the newspaper won the prize for Digital Journalism.

This award for Latin American media was given for the first time this year, and joins the other categories of Press, Radio, Television, Photography, Digital Journalism and Ibero-America, as well as the Don Quixote Prize for Journalism, which recognizes use of language and honors those who enrich the Spanish language.

Although El País was initially a Spanish newspaper, in recent years it has expanded its horizons to embrace Latin America, a region which now has its own digital version. The newspaper also has a Portuguese edition, published in Brazil. The prestigious daily, belonging to Grupo PRISA, is present in 23 countries, including many in Ibero-America and the US Hispanic market.

The newspaper is available in multiple formats and 53% of its online readers are from outside Spain, with Latin America accounting for 49% and the USA 9%, according to group figures. In 2011, the newspaper launched a new International section on its website, with a special focus on Latin America. In addition to Madrid and Barcelona, ​​the paper has newsdesks in Mexico, Washington DC and Sao Paulo. More than 300 journalists work round the clock keeping up to date the four online editions of the newspaper: Spain, the Americas, Brazil and the Catalan edition

El País has been honored with numerous awards, including the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities in 1983, and the jury’s special mention at the Society for New Design Awards in 2004, given by this international organization for professional media, and based in United States.
