10-05-2016

More than 15,000 people visited last week the exhibition that reviews 40 years of history with EL PAÍS, an exhibition that also shows how society has changed over that time. The multisensory exhibition, which features over 350 iconic images, 120 historical front pages and 15 cutting edge screens is at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid from 2 to 8 May. Visitors also experienced EL PAÍS’s first ever virtual reality report: a journey to Fukushima five years after the nuclear disaster.

Several of the most significant events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of EL PAÍS were held during the first week of May. On Wednesday May 4, the newspaper’s birthday, there was a lunch for employees, attended by some 600 people. On Thursday, there was a gala dinner, during which the Ortega y Gasset Awards for Journalism were handed out. The ceremony was presided over by the King and Queen of Spain, and brought together figures from the world of politics such as Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, Pablo Iglesias, Pedro Sánchez, Felipe González, Albert Rivera, Alberto Garzón, Ana Pastor, Alfonso Alonso and Jorge Fernández Díaz. The world of culture was represented by Ana Belén, Victor Manuel, Miguel Rios, Juanjo Millas, Elvira Lindo, Fernando Savater and José Mercé.

On Friday May 6, the UAM-EL PAÍS School of Journalism celebrated its 30th anniversary with a party which brought together many of the more than one thousand students who have learned the trade trade of journalism in its classrooms.

On Saturday, the busiest day for the exhibition with around 4,000 visitors, the exhibition remained open until midnight and featured food stalls and concerts.

And the events to commemorate the 40th anniversary don’t stop here. This week also sees Retina, the Ibero-American technology forum which brings together more than 40 experts on digital disruption from all over the world. Meanwhile EL PAÍS continues to host a series of daytime concerts that are bringing together generations of music fans: the Wild Feathers (May 14), a tribute to Lorca (May 28) and Alba Molina (June 4).

Paul McCartney will perform on June 2 at the Vicente Calderón stadium in a concert celebrating 40 years of EL PAÍS and 50 years of radio network 40 Principales.

The newspaper will also have a stand at the Madrid Book Fair, featuring a range of events activities involving Bernard-Henri Levy and Adela Cortina, among others.
