PRISA against climate change

09-03-2009

PRISA is to collaborate with the world's leading independent conservation organization, the WWF, by promoting the world's largest ever participative event on Saturday, March 28 at 8.30pm.

As part of its commitment to social responsibility in environmental issues, PRISA will employ all its media outlets to support Earth Hour 2009, which aims to reach more than one billion people, town halls, communities, businesses and institutions and show that common action on climate change and the construction of a sustainable future is possible.

With the goal of creating a powerful mandate for world leaders and governments to take strong and decisive action at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (December 2009), PRISA  is lending its support to the WWF initiative, whereby millions of people around the globe will unite for one hour and switch off their lights in a symbolic gesture. Already, some 685 countries in 77 countries have joined the initiative and, at exactly the same time, will turn the lights down on some of the world's most recognizable buildings and monuments - thus showing that joint and coordinated efforts are possible. In Spain, the lights will be switched off on Madrid's Cibeles fountain and Puerta de Alcalá, Granada's Alhambra, Barcelona's Torre Agbar and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Leading figures from the worlds of the arts and sports are also lending their support to the campaign, including Nelly Furtado, the King of Sweden, Nobel-prizewinner Desmond Tutu, Cate Blanchet, Miguel Bosé, Sergio Dalma, Raphael, José Coronado and the footballer Raúl, all of whom will be urging the public to take part.

PRISA will be using all its media outlets to get the message across in every country where the company has a presence, i.e. TV, radio, the press and internet. And Santillana will be getting the word out in schools.

The awareness drive will go on throughout the month of March in the form of a countdown, with the message being that there's still time to stop climate change. It will be broadcast on radio - nationally and internationally - TV channels Cuatro and Digital+, in newspapers El País and Cinco Días and across all Prisacom's websites.

WWF enjoys the support of a further 182 companies, such as Coca Cola, Telefónica, IKEA, Vodafone, Disney and Vitruvio Leo Burnet, all of whom will be doing their bit to promote the initiative.
