PRISA against climate change

17-03-2010

Once again, PRISA is to collaborate with the world's leading independent conservation organization, the WWF, by promoting the world's largest ever participative event on Saturday, March 27 at 8.30pm.

As part of its commitment to social responsibility in environmental issues, PRISA will employ all its media outlets to support Earth Hour 2010, which aims to reach more than six billion people, town halls, communities, businesses and institutions and show that common action on climate change and the construction of a sustainable future is possible.

With the goal of creating a powerful mandate for world leaders and governments to take strong and decisive action at the Climate Change, PRISA  is lending its support to the WWF initiative, whereby millions of people around the globe will unite for one hour and switch off their lights in a symbolic gesture. Already, 1.700 cities in 104 countries have joined the initiative and, at exactly the same time, will turn the lights down on some of the world's most recognizable buildings and monuments as Paris' Eiffel Tower, Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue, New York's Empire State Building, or Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world - thus showing that joint and coordinated efforts are possible. In Spain, the lights will be switched off on El Escorial, Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum, Granada's Alhambra, Aranjuez's Royal Palace and Madrid's Puerta de Alcalá. Leading figures from the worlds of the arts and sports are also lending their support to the campaign, including Nobel-prizewinner Desmond Tutu, the British actress Miranda Richardson, the Brazilian model Giselle Bundchen or the panda bear Mei Lan and Pocoyó all of whom will be urging the public to take part.

PRISA will be using all its media outlets to get the message across in every country where the company has a presence, i.e. TV, radio, the press and internet. The awareness drive will go on throughout the month of March in the form of a countdown, with the message being that there's still time to stop climate change. It will be broadcast on radio - nationally and internationally - TV channels Cuatro and Digital+, in newspapers El País and Cinco Días and across all PRISA's websites.

WWF enjoys the support of companies such as Coca Cola, IKEA, HSBC, BBVA, Osram, Telefónica, Canon, Cemusa and Vitruvio Leo Burnet, all of whom will be doing their bit to promote the initiative.
