PRISA posts pre-tax profit of 289 million euros, up 37.7%

• Operating income is up 31.4% to 3,696.03 million euros while earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) are up 81.8% totalling 519.93 million euros. Headline profits (EBITDA) are up 46.7% at 779.62 million euros.

• Advertising revenues are up 46.7%. Most notable are the increases for radio in Spain (+11%), international radio (+20.4%), El País (+6.4%), As (14.5%), Cuatro (+88.2%) and digital media (+48.3%).

• Sogecable posts headline profits (EBITDA) of 323.92 million euros. Cuatro, with an operating income of 287.49 million euros, has had a positive result and closes the year with a 7.7% audience share. Digital+ saw its subscription base rise to 2,065,000.

• Santillana's revenues are up by 14.5% totalling 560 million euros, with significant increases in Spain (+9.5%), Brazil (+42.1%), Venezuela (+38.3%) and Colombia (+22.35).

• Radio sees its EBITDA climb by 24.3%.Cadena SER confirms its absolute leadership, recording 5,056,000 listeners.

• El País remains daily newspaper market leader, posting a 0.7% growth in distribution. As is up 9.3% and Cinco Días is up 19.3%.

• TVI remains Portugal's leading channel with a daily audience share of 34.3%.


Grupo PRISA has broken all its own records, closing 2007 with pre-tax profits of 289 million euros. In the same period, operating income is up 31.4% to 3,696.03 million euros.

PRISA's headline profit was 779,62 million euros in 2007 - up from 531.46 million, or 46.7%, over 2006. The EBITDA margin over revenues was 21.1%, up from 2006's 18.9%, thanks chiefly to the integration of Media Capital, as well as an improvement in Sogecable's margins and those in radio.

EBIT in 2007 reached 519.93 million euros, up from 285.95 million in 2006, an interannual increase of 81.8%. The EBIT margin was 14.1%, compared to 10.2% for the previous period.

The decrease in net profit is due to 100 million tax-payment difference as compared to 2006.

Advertising revenue is up 46.7%.

Advertising revenue is at 1,122.27 million euros, a 46.7% increase. The most significant gains were enjoyed by radio in Spain (+11%), international radio (+20.4%), El País (+6.4%), As (+14.5%), Sogecable (+80.5%), Cuatro (+88.2%) y el Área Digital (48.3%).

Book and text book sales

Book and text book sales are up 15.4% in 2007 reaching 536.47 million euros. In Spain, the increase was 9.5%, where the growth in the textbook and language book market has gone up 1%.

Particularly strong was growth in Brazil (+42.1%), Venezuela (+38,3%) Colombia (+22.3%) y Chile (+22.2%).

Newspaper and magazine sales

Newspaper and magazine sales revenues are at 210.52 million euros, up 4.8% in 2007.

Average daily distribution for El País grew 0.7% to 435,083 copies up from 432,204 in 2006. El País thus maintains its upward trend in the last quarter of 2007, which saw figures rise by 8% in December. In January 2008, distribution figures rose to 452,893 copies daily, a 12% rise (this figure is pending certification by the audit bureau OJD).

With regards to readership figures, El País has reconfirmed its top ranking among the non-giveaway press, recording 2,234,000 readers (third quarter OJD figures). It's the highest figure in the paper's 31-year history and puts it ahead of its nearest competitor by 59.8%.

Sports paper As has also seen its average daily circulation grow in 2007 by 9.3%, reaching a total of 234,587 copies. As has seen its market share grow, has consolidated its leadership in Madrid and has beaten its own record by reaching figures of 1,170,000 - up 9.7% over the previous round of figures.

Cinco Días has recorded growth of 19.3% in average daily circulation, totalling 40,552 copies.

Pay TV and Cuatro

Subscriptions to DIGITAL+ have reached 2,065,000 after signing up 21,000 new net customers in 2007.

Cuatro closes 2007 with positive EBIT. It has positioned itself as a new alternative in the Spanish TV sector with an audience share of 7.7%, up from 6.4% in 2006.
