Santillana has been providing vital cultural support in Acobamba province in the department of Huancavelica (Peru) since 2011. As part of this initiative, Santillana has donated educational kits and books that will help kickstart a library. The project is part of the Public-Private Partnership for the Development of Acobamba (APPDA), which will run over four years.
Huancavelica has the lowest educational performance levels in the country, which is a barrier to development and social inclusion. Only 5% of students have access to Internet, making the recruitment and training of teachers difficult. As well as the donation of educational material, Santillana is contributing to teacher training through more than 165 practical workshops, providing participants with the opportunity to learn new teaching techniques without leaving their community, with the help of professionals concerned with their educational and cultural needs.
During this second year of work in Acobamba, a donation was made of 71 starter kits for teachers, 225 communication guides and 225 mathematics guides. "This donation confirms our commitment to the educational and cultural development of Acobamba. There is still much work to do, and we look forward with great optimism to the progress of this community, whose educational needs have been neglected for many years," said Javier Laria, General Manager of Santillana.
The donation of the material was attended by Rolando Landeo, representing Acobamba; Edwin Olivera, Mayor of Acobamba; Javier Laria, General Manager of Santillana and Dora Veliz.
