Santillana shows commitment to new reader experiences at LIBER

01-10-2012

Santillana is to renew its commitment to the creation of new reader experiences  via new technologies. The challenge is to integrate text, audio and video, thus creating a new reading idiom without undermining reading comprehension. Graphics, podcasts, images, sound, games, chats, forums ... these are just some of the wide range of resources that can be added to a rich cocktail of enhanced content that will facilitate and enable more in-depth reading. Will these new formats change the way we approach a text?

At LIBER, during the Fira de Barcelona, these are just some of the book-related issues on the agenda. This international fair is being held from October 3 to 5 at a time of deep uncertainty and great opportunities for the publishing industry.

For the second consecutive year, the Fira fair will be joined by Liber - the digital sector forum, which discusses and analyzes new reading habits.

Iria Alvarez, head of digital strategy implementation at Prisa Ediciones, which includes the labels Alfaguara, Taurus, Aguilar, El País-Aguilar, Suma and Alfaguara Infantil y Juvenil, will speak on the electronic book market in Spain on October 3 at 5.20pm, analyzing trends, risks and opportunities in the ebook market in relation to the value chain of the traditional book.

As opposed to the single reading experience offered by the traditional book, the advent of e-publishing opens up a wide range of opportunities in digital formats. Some experts question the usefulness of e-books and fear that the excess of resources deployed may distract the reader's attention, but e-books are also increasingly being seen as a tool to improve comprehension and increase readership.

This interesting and open debate will also be joined by Fernanda del Real, expert on typographies and their use in digital media.

Del Real researches the application of new technologies to books as well as interaction with text that might help children with dyslexia.

All this and more will be explored in the workshop Reading and Digital Creativity in Education Communities, run by InveryCrea, Santillana’s social network of teachers, on October 3 at 4.40 pm, with a maximum capacity of 80 atendees.
