The third annual International Don Quixote de la Mancha Award, awarded by the Fundación Santillana and the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, has been won by the New Grammar of the Spanish Language, published by the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language and the Association of Spanish Language Academies, in the category for best institutional endeavor.

The jury said that this monumental work had contributed more than any other to the unity of the Spanish language in over a century.

In the category for the most outstanding individual career, the writer Juan Goytisolo was honored for the entirety of his literary work, which has given new life to the Spanish novel, stimulated critical thought and fostered, thanks to the writer's prestige, cultural dialogue with the Arab world.

The jury, which met in Madrid today, was chaired by José María Barreda, President of Castilla-La Mancha, and included Víctor García de la Concha, Director of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language; Maria Angeles García, Counselor for Education, Science and Culture of Castilla-La Mancha; Gregorio Marañón, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fundación Teatro Real; the writer Nelida Piñon; Carmen Caffarel, Director of Instituto Cervantes; Juan Luis Cebrian, Chairman of the Executive Committee and CEO of PRISA; Emiliano Martinez, president of Grupo Santillana, and Basilio Baltasar, Director of the Fundación Santillana, who served as secretary.

The International Don Quixote de la Mancha Award was established in 2008 with the aim of giving institutional recognition to the work of individuals and institutions of any nationality who contribute most to the international dissemination and awareness of Spanish culture and language. The prize for each category is € 25,000, and the winners also receive a prize sculpture by artist Manolo Valdés.

The awards ceremony will take place in the city of Toledo in the fall of 2010.
