The UAM-EL PAÍS School of Journalism announces workshops to keep apace with the digital world

14-12-2016

"When we change the way we communicate, we change society," says Clay Shirky, a New York University professor and expert on social media and the effect of the Internet on culture. To help students acquire the skills demanded by the digital revolution is the aim of two new courses offered by the UAM-EL PAÍS School of Journalism in collaboration with the BBVA Foundation. The courses, although open to anyone interested, are specially designed for professionals from the world of communications and journalism who are seeking to develop and expand their professional profiles. Both courses begin on January 13.

The workshops on video journalism and data visualization and interpretation will both be held at the School’s headquarters in Madrid on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, over a number of weeks. Places are limited as these are highly personalized courses. The cost of each course is 500 euros.

The 88-hour video journalism workshop will be coordinated by Carlos de Vega, deputy photography and video editor of the newspaper EL PAÍS, and will take place on weekends between mid January and March. Students will learn about video editing, facing the camera, and the use of animation and narrative to communicate. A similar but shorter course held last year was a great success among students, who graded it an average of 8.5 out of 10.

The data visualization and interpretation workshop is coordinated by Antonio Delgado, a journalist specialized in data analysis and head of editorial innovation at Weblogs SL. The course addresses, in a very practical way, how to filter out stories from large, diverse databases, and how to communicate these through graphs, maps and other means of data visualization that improve understanding. The workshop covers the management of a series of analytical and statistical tools. A similar but shorter course held last year was a great success among students, who graded it an average of 8.7 out of 10.
