The Unión de Periodistas Valencianos (Valencian Jounalist's Union) has marked World Press Freedom Day by honoring Daniel Anido and Rodolfo Irago, director of Cadena Ser and news director of the radio broadcaster, respectively.
The Press Freedom Award 2010 recognizes the work of the Cadena SER journalists in favor of freedom of information and expression. Both have received jail sentences and have been barred from exercising their profession for the disclosure of secrets after going public with a list of irregular membership affiliations to the Partido Popular in Madrid. Receiving his award, Daniel Anido echoed the words of the great journalist Tomás Eloy Martínez calling for journalism to struggle against "the muzzling of the press". "We wholeheartedly believe in these words. And we would do what we have done over and over again. We are still journalists."
Other award winners included a group of Valencian photojournalists; Román de la Calle, the former director of the Valencian Museum of the Enlightenment; an association for victims of the Valencia metro accident (Asociación de Víctimas del Metro 3J) and the Canary Islands' magazine, Cuadernos del Sureste.
All the award winners were unanimous in pointing out that even today in 2010, press freedom remains under attack.
