Reading as a journey without borders, at Santillana Peru

25-06-2015

With the slogan "Reading in the 21st century: a journey without borders", Santillana Peru has held a new edition of the International Congress of Children's Literature, an event dedicated to exploring and debating new reading practices. The invited experts contributed their views and experience on the crucial role of teachers in the development of cognitive and emotional skills that children and young people need to develop reading skills.

Presentations were given by recognized national figures such as Hernán Garrido-Lecca, Jorge Eslava, Mávila Huertas, José Luis Mejía, Patricia Osorio, Ruben Silva, and Yeniffer Diaz Saavedra. Among the international guests were Pablo De Santis (Argentina), Gemma Lluch (Spain), Aldo Méndez (Cuba), Mauricio Large (Colombia), Mauricio Paredes (Chile), María Fernanda Heredia (Ecuador) and Jordi Sierra i Fabra (Spain).

In Peru there is a widespread social awareness regarding the importance of education, and official institutions and private companies such as Santillana develop a range of initiatives to improve the quality of the education system. All too aware of Peru’s poor ranking in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) of the OECD, these companies and institutions also endeavor to encourage the commitment of teachers in motivating good reading habits. In keeping with this commitment, Santillana held, in parallel to the congress, a series of webinars on reading, aimed at teachers and the general public.
