The winners of the 13th edition of the Ortega y Gasset Awards for Journalism, given by the newspaper El Pais, have been announced. The winner in the print journalism category was Alberto Salcedo Ramos ( Colombia , 1963 ) for his report La travesía de Wikdi (Widki’s Journey), published in the magazine Soho. The jury praised the report that follows " the everyday lives of invisible people, the risk to the life of the central protagonist, the path between innocence and horror and the metaphor involving the five hours that each day Wikdi has to travel to get to school , as an example of the road that leads to learning and the importance of education. " The jury also paid tribute to the quality of the writing .

The prize for digital journalism went to Juan Ramon Robles (Madrid , 1987), for the video he recorded during protests on September 25, 2012, with police baton charging protesters inside Atocha Station in Madrid. The jury highlighted " the importance of citizen journalism in recent years. This video gives a real picture of the social unrest of last September, and shows how citizen cameras can sometimes go where mainstream media can’t. It is also a product of someone who is at home in the digital world , it possesses a clear narrative syntax and illustrates, thanks to the number of views , the readers' interest in frontline news . "

In the category of photojournalism, the winner was Emilio Morenatti ( Zaragoza , 1969 ) from Associated Press, for a picture taken in Barcelona on March 29,2012 , during the general strike . The award-winning photograph features a shop assistant, terrified by the destruction wreaked by violent protesters during a demonstration. The jury said that the image produces " emotion . It's terrifying. One feels the fear of the shop assistant . It is also an image that captures another side to the incidents , of those who suffer the wrath of violent demonstrators. "

The prize for a lifetime dedicated to journalism was awarded to Jesus de la Serna (Santander , 1926 ) . The jury paid tribute to De la Serna’s long career and his journalistic work that set Spain on the road to modernity, as well as his work as a teacher who was an example to generations of journalists . His generosity , humility, professionalism and honesty make De la Serna one of the most outstanding figures in the history of Spanish journalism .

The jury was made up of journalists Pepa Bueno and Yoani Sanchez, photographer Raul Cancio , actress Irene Escolar , member of the Royal Spanish Academy Dario Villanueva , the president of El País Juan Luis Cebrian, the former editors-in-chief Joaquin Estefania and Jesus Ceberio , and the deputy editor-in-chief of El País , Vicente Jimenez. Pedro Zuazua , communications director of PRISA NOTICIAS, acted as jury secretary .

The Ortega y Gasset Prizes for Journalism were created in 1984 by the newspaper El País, and are named after the Spanish philosopher and journalist José Ortega y Gasset. The prizes honor work published in Spanish worldwide, recognizing, in particular, work that champions human rights, independence, rigor, curiosity and passion: in short all the hallmarks of excellent journalism.

The awards are open to written or graphic work published in Spanish-language newspapers or magazines worldwide. Each award is worth 15,000 euros in prize money and is accompanied by a work by sculptor Eduardo Chillida.
