EL PAÍS partners with Google to develop a new open-source standard for publishing content

08-10-2015

EL PAÍS, founding member of the Digital News Initiative (DNI), has teamed up with Google and seven other European media (including The Financial Times, The Guardian and the Frankfurter Allgemeine), for the development of Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), a new open framework which allows users to almost instantly access media content.

The main objective of this new open format, whose prototype was presented yesterday simultaneously in London and New York, is to improve the user experience and reduce page load times, while also giving publishers control over content, distribution and associated revenues.

This is the first project to be backed by Digital News Initiative, which was established in April 2015 in Europe and in which EL PAÍS has participated since the beginning. The newspaper is the only Spanish-language news publisher to have worked on the development of the AMP format, which involves thirty media publishers and platforms such as Twitter, Pinterest and Wordpress.

DNI aims to contribute to building a sustainable model for digital media through continued collaboration between Google and media publishers,.

The next phase of the AMP initiative will focus on responding to issues related to different content formats, analytics and advertising, and on fine tuning the prototype presented yesterday.
