El País starts the year with an absolute lead

El País starts off the year as clear leader among the Spanish press, with a distribution figure of 378,783 copies in January, according data, pending certification, from auditing bureau OJD. The daily newspaper widens its lead over its nearest rival to 67,000 copies daily. On Sundays, sales figures for El País stand at 585,949 copies.

Among the sports press, As sees its market share continue to grow, both for sales and distribution figures. It also confirms its lead in Madrid and Barcelona, as well as in 13 other provinces. Despite the crisis, the sports daily maintains its sales figure in January 2010 as compared to the previous year (+0.2%), and the accumulated figure is now 212,279 copies.
