Online newspaper design award for ELPAÍS.com

ELPAÍS.com has won the award in the category for best designed online publication with more than 12 million page views per month at the eighth edition of the event ÑH The Best of Newspaper Design Spain & Portugal 2011, organized by the Spanish chapter of Society for New Design (SNDE).

The jury, meeting in Pamplona between 29 September and 1 October, voted the website of Basque public radio, www.eitb.com, winner in the category for online publication with less than 12 million monthly visits . The web sites www.harpersbazaar.es and  www.lavanguardia.com were among the nominees..

Two ELPAIS.com special feature sections also won gold medals in the category for digital publications: section page design. One was the round up of the year's news Summary of 2010 and the other was titled Desaparecidos (Missing) published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name by photojournalist Gervasio Sanchez and dedicated to those who haven't given up looking for their loved ones in the wake of wars, dictatorships and persecution.

ELPAÍS.com also won two silver medals for its coverage of the most recent state of the nation debate and the Goya Awards in February. There were also special mentions for coverage of Zapatero's decision not to run for reelection, the Cibeles fashion show, the uprisings across the Arab world, the exhibition of the painter Antonio Lopez at the Thyssen Museum in Madrid and the 75th anniversary of the military uprising of July 18, 1936.

2,420 works from 63 media organizations in Spain and Portugal competed for the ÑH awards. Of these, 2,150 were print media and 270 were digital publications.

The ÑH Awards, which will be handed out next month, were created to promote quality in visual journalism in Spain and Portugal, to fruitfully bring together journalism, design, photography, infographics and illustration, and to recognize good practice in media of all kinds.
