PRISA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

20-06-2012

Today sees the start in Rio de Janeiro of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio +20, for which PRISA is acting as a media partner.

The summit, aimed at achieving sustainable growth for the planet, is being held from 20 to 22 June, and is being attended by nearly 130 heads of state and government from 128 countries, as well as representatives from institutions and organizations, totaling 50,000 attendees. Conference organizers have received thousands of proposals from a hundred academies of science worldwide, and thousands of environmental NGOs have mobilized -- all concerned for the planet and worried that the effects of unsustainable growth will bring misery to both developed and developing countries.

PRISA, which since 2008 has been signed up to the United Nations Global Compact on human rights, labor rights, the environment and the fight against corruption, is all too aware of the urgent need for global and ambitious decision-making that will address both the environmental crisis and poverty. The Group will thus be supporting the Conference via all its global media outlets and will be providing significant coverage, especially at newspaper El Pais, which has reserved a special area in its online edition providing all the news and information from the Earth Summit. There’ll be news on the course of the Conference, opinion pieces from leading experts and interviews with key world leaders. We’ll also be asking for readers’ collaboration and encouraging them to participate and comment through the the social networks (Eskup, Facebook and Twitter) at the tag # queesperasdeRio.
