Sogecable deposits 90 million Euros with the Court handling Mediapro insolvency to guarantee football broadcasts

30-06-2010

  • AVS has asked the bankruptcy administrators for the return of its legitimate football-broadcast rights.
  • Digital +, Canal + and Canal + Liga are guaranteed broadcast rights for next season's league

Sogecable has today lodged with Barcelona's Commercial Court No. 7, responsible for handling Mediapro's petition for bankruptcy protection, 90 million Euros as a first payment for the broadcasting rights of the Spanish League for next season.

Sogecable has deposited the sum to ensure the orderly broadcast of football on TV. Sogecable has also asked the company's administrators to return and make available to AVS, a company in which Sogecable holds an 80% stake, the media rights that legitimately belong to said company and recognized as such and declared enforceable by the ruling of Madrid's Court of First Instance No. 36. The filing for bankruptcy by Mediapro does not render null the decision of the Court of Madrid or its enforceability, with this to be determined by the Barcelona court.

Sogecable has deposited the 90 million Euros with the court for its subsequent delivery to Mediapro, declared insolvent, in order that this sum will be passed on to the football clubs.

In light of these extremely serious circumstances, Sogecable has taken this responsible decision to ensure the stability of the football clubs, to safeguard the existing television broadcast model and in defense of football fans and the company's own subscribers, who will now have guaranteed access to all league games next season via Digital +, Canal + and Canal + Liga.

Finally, Sogecable is confident that Mediapro's bankruptcy administration, under the tutelage of Commercial Court of Barcelona, will take appropriate measures to ensure that the money given to Mediapro will be made over to the football clubs involved for the correct audiovisual management of the League and to ensure the return of all broadcast rights to the rightful owner as soon as possible.
