24-11-2009

The Fundación Santillana and the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library Foundation (Fundación Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes) have teamed up to create an internet portal aimed at the English-speaking world. Ignacio Polanco and Mario Vargas Llosa, representing their respective organizations, today signed the deal aimed at promoting the Spanish-language essay in the US and other English-speaking counties.

The initiative, which will get underway early next year, will make some of the best works of Spanish language non-fiction writing available online in English.

The joint project will also allow users to print any of the works translated into English on demand, thus removing one of the traditional obstacles that have till now restricted the availability in English-speaking countries of Spanish-language works from the world of the social sciences.

The works will be selected by a committee of social scientists and will be accompanied by introductions written by US and British specialists.
