Top international New York Festival Radio Award goes to W Radio

23-06-2015

For the second year running, the Festival honors W Radio with the gold medal -- this time for its coverage of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States.

Competing with broadcasters from more than 30 countries, W Radio has been honored with one of the world’s top radio awards at the New York Festivals. The Colombian broadcaster was given the Gold Medal in the category "Best Coverage Of Ongoing News Story" for its coverage of the historic announcement of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States.

Radio listeners were able to hear the reactions of the chief players in the story from Cuba, the United States, Europe and Latin America in a special live broadcast to six countries.

W Radio faced tough competition from programs produced by Ireland, the Philippines and the United States. The list of finalists for the awards World's Best Radio Programs is available here.

A jury of prominent producers, directors and audiovisual journalists was responsible for selecting the winner.

The award is just the latest in a series of high profile tributes for W Radio’s journalism. In recent years, W Radio and its director Julio Sanchez Cristo have received the Premios Ondas Prize, the King of Spain Journalism Award and the Circle of Journalists of Bogotá Prize, among others.
