EL PAÍS implanta el Plan 828, una estrategia de adaptación de la información a las demandas de los lectores

Putting the reader at the center of all strategy: EL PAÍS continues to forge ahead with its process of digital transformation and is now focusing all its efforts on producing news content that can be distributed in whichever format, on whatever platform and at whatever time the reader prefers. To this end, EL PAÍS has implemented Plan 828, which adapts www.elpais.com content to changing consumer habits.

Plan 828 responds to the need to adapt news and information to the time slots of greatest demand on digital channels:  early morning, lunchtime and evening. EL PAÍS will make three pauses to take stock of the day, at 8.00, at 14.00 and at 20.00 (CET), to inform and add analysis and context to what is happening in the news.

This strategy does not, however, alter the normal dynamics of a global media outlet such as EL PAÍS. The newspaper will continue to offer the best news and information, updated every minute and every time a news story breaks, and is also adding three "closes" or daily editions that will summarize, explain, analyze and contextualize the most important events of the day.

Plan 828 also involves the redesign and expansion of  the newspaper’s free digital bulletins that are sent to registered users via email. The day’s first news bulletin is being brought forward to 7:30 am and includes, among other content, the most important news of the day, the cartoon by Roto (in advance) and recommended stories. The evening bulletin is also being revamped and, at 21.00, brings readers the most important news of the day, the cartoon by Forges (before its publication on the website), an article from the Claves section, also in advance, weather and a report specifically designed for more relaxed reading.

In addition to these updates, EL PAÍS is also creating four new weekly news digests in bulletin format that join Verne, Babelia and El Comidista and constitute the first phase of expansion of content in this new format, which will be further developed in the coming months with new content.

The Best of the EL PAÍS (Lo Mejor de EL PAÍS) offers every Sunday a selection of the most important content of the week. EL PAÍS Global comes out on Tuesdays with the best international news reports and opinion pieces. Friday sees the film section, EL PAÍS de Cine, with interviews, reports and reviews, including Carlos Boyero’s, covering the week’s new movies. Finally, on Mondays,  EL PAÍS Televisión recommends all the best television content, and offers readers another chance to check out the most read TV article of the week, plus an opinion piece and TV show recommendations.

Plan 828 has brought the work of the newsroom ahead, with staff getting an earlier start. Those working on front pages, reporters and the social networking team will be working from the early hours to get out the "first edition" of the day at 8.00 and the first bulletin at 7.30 am.

With this strategy, EL PAÍS strengthens its commitment to adopting measures required by global media’s new digital news ecosystem. It’s a transformation process that started with the modification of workflows, continued with the hiring of new professional profiles – and even physical reorganization, as with the recent reorganization of the editorial teams.
