The campaign ´SER fights against hunger´ comes to an end with great success

05-06-2012

The radio station´s social action managed to fulfill its triple commitment: inform, spread awareness and fundraise

The campaign included a month and a half of intense journalistic work, including interviews, testimonies, special features and breaking news, a fundraising website golescontraelhambre.com (headed by sports journalists and with the support of well-known people from the worlds of sports and culture), a visit to the heart of the Sahel with the evening news program Hora 25 and a conference-event with main experts in the fight against hunger, Encuentrospor.com

The social campaign ´SER fights against hunger´ has come to an end having successfully fulfilled its three commitments: inform, spread awareness and fundraise. Hunger does have a solution and SER has taken a big step in this direction, conscious of media´s social responsibility and its power of repercussion and influence.

During a month and a half, SER has informed, through its radios, the website cadenaser.com and various social networks, about the severe nutritional crisis many regions  of the world are going through. The message has been received by millions of people, thanks to a campaign in which all of Cadena SER´s professionals and stations have implicated themselves in the promotion of a culture of solidarity amongst listeners and internet users.

In order to raise funds and spread awareness about the importance of collaboration, SER started up, along with the NGO Action Against Hunger, golescontralelhambre.com, a virtual arena equipped with stands of solidarity and a royal box with more than 40 stars like Michael Robinson, Juanma Iturriaga, David Bustamante, Jorge Valdano, Ana Torroja, María Valverde and Alfredo Relaño, amongst others.  The web page received almost 20,000 visits, having been registered 8,500 reproductions of campaign videos. A total of 33,000 goals were scored, meaning 50,000 euros being destined exclusively to the cause.

In the second half of the campaign, Àngels Barceló and a team of SER journalists travelled to the Sahel to learn first-hand about the situation and talk to listeners about how hunger is affecting this part of the world and how NGOs are working to help. Throughout May 21st, all of the day´s programs connected with the team. In the evening, Hora 25 broadcast a special edition dedicated entirely, on spot, to this topic.

As a means of concluding the campaign, and in order to debate about the keys in the fight against world hunger, on May 30th an edition of the conference-event Encuentropor.com was held in Seville, with the participation of national and international experts in this area, including Pepe Esquinas, Stephane Doyon, Hortense Sombie, Gonzalo Fanjul and Jean Ziegler, and  representatives of NGOs, like Unicef, Intermón Oxfam, Cruz Roja, Fundación Vicente Ferrer and Action Against Hunger. This debate, presented by Iñaki Gabilondo, was Trending Topic in Spain, with the hashtag #luchacontraelhambre.
